The first Medals of Honor were
actually presented to six young soldiers on March 25, 1863. After receiving the
medals, the young men met the President of the United States.

During the Civil War, soldiers as young as 12 - 14 years old
received Medals of Honor. Many of them were drummer boys.

Sailors and Marines received Medals of Honor for heroism at sea
during Naval battles of the Civil War.

first...and ONLY...woman in history to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

William Carney was a former slave who joined the
Army and fought for the North during the Civil War. He was the first

Native Americans earn the Medal of Honor as scouts for the US
Cavalry in the old west.

Even a few civilians earned Medals of Honor. One of the most
famous was William Cody, who became famous as Buffalo Bill.

The Navy awarded some Medals of Honor for heroic life-saving
actions. At the time, the Medal of Honor was the only medal that could be received

Courageous pioneers like Charles Lindbergh also received Medals of
Honor for their special brand of courage.

To distinguish different kinds and levels of heroism, in 1917 a
series of medals was finally created. Called the Pyramid of Honor, the
Medal of Honor was the highest of the award, and now could only be earned for heroism in
combat.

Facing strict new guidelines for awarding the Medal of Honor, it
became a rare award during World War I. Those few men who received it became
National celebrities like Sergeant York.

American pilots were important in turning the tide of battle early
in World War II. A few received Medals of Honor. Many of them died before
their Medal could be presented to them.

President Truman, himself a veteran of military service during
World War I, presented more Medals of Honor than any other President. He always did
so with great respect and admiration for the men who earned it.
