Captain Charles Lindbergh, an Army Air Corps reservist, made the first non-stop flight from New York to Paris--ALONE--in 1927. Often called the "Lone Eagle", Congress took special action to recognize his courage and awarded him the Medal of Honor in. His was one of the few non-combat awards made by special Congressional action. A similar award was made the same year to Admiral Richard Byrd who flew over the North Pole. |
