The Cavalry employed civilians who knew the western territory well, to act as scouts for the cavalry. Five of these scouts received Medals of Honor. One of the most famous of these Medal of Honor civilian heroes was William "Buffalo Bill" Cody who often wore his Medal in his Wild West Show.
