William Carney was a former slave who joined the Union Army when the Emancipation Proclamation made it possible for Black men to serve.  In his first battle he rescued the flag and carried it through battle even though wounded several times.  He told his fellow soldiers, "I only did my duty...our flag never touched the ground."
