Dr. Mary Walker was a 29-year old civilian when she volunteered to treat the wounded on the field of battle. Dressed in the uniform of an army officer, her courage on the fields of battle earned her the Medal of Honor. She is the ONLY woman ever awarded our Nation's highest medal for military heroism. Years later the US Postal Service issued a special stamp in her honor. |
