On July 12 1862, in the early days of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill establishing a "medal of honor" for soldiers in the Army who showed special bravery in combat. A few months earlier he had signed a similar bill for sailors in the Navy as well as for US Marines. |
