The Printable Book

Wings of Valor is the title we have given to our on-going series of stories detailing the history of our Nation's heroes from that first historic flight at Kitty Hawk to the creation of the United States Air Force.  There web-series can be read at www.HomeOfHeroes.com/wings.  For those who wish a printable copy, we are preparing what will eventually be a 3-volume set in printable, full-color book format, that you can download from this page.

Volume I

Volume I is the first in the series and covers the period from the Wright Brothers first flight up to World War I (the last chapter details the service and heroism of Charles Lindbergh and Eddie Rickenbacker in World War II.)  This is a 251-page, full-color book complete with appendixes.  Once you download the file, you may print as many as you wish, so that you can share it with others.  This books makes a very attractive gift, especially if you have a friend or family member in military service.

We provide the files for this book in two different formats:  Microsoft WORD and .PDF.  If you have WORD 2000 or later, we recommend this version.  All of these are large files that will take some download time.  The single WORD file will take at least an hour on a dial-up modem.  The .PDF version had to be split into three separate parts, each of which will take half-an-hour or more to download it.  Be patient...it's well worth the wait.  Once downloaded you can save the file to your hard drive and print any time, and as often, as you wish.

FOR WORD® FILES:
When you click on the WORD® icon to open one of our books, the file will automatically start downloading.  When it is finished downloading (30 minutes to an hour on most computers, it will open in WORD® just like any other WORD® file you might create yourself.  Once it opens, you can either print it, or save it to your hard drive for printing later.  Once it is on your hard drive, you will have it for future printings as well.

FOR .PDF FILES:

STEP 1:  If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, first download a FREE copy of this important software by clicking on the icon below  (Adobe Acrobat Reader is a helpful tool for many HomeOfHeroes.com printable features, as well as special forms and pages in many other websites.)

STEP 2:  When Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed on your computer, the electronic book files will open when you click on the hyperlink to the book you want.  (Because these files are larger than a typical web page, it may take several minutes before you see the file on your monitor.)

STEP 3:  You can print the opened electronic book simply by clicking the PRINT icon on the Adobe Acrobat Reader tool bar.  The pages are in REVERSE ORDER, so they will be collated by the time the printing is done.  If you only want ONE copy of the book, that is your best option.  If you plan to print more than one copy, or to reprint in the future, you can save the file to disk and open it without download delay as many times as you wish.  To download the opened Adobe .pdf file to disk, click on the SAVE icon (circled in red), then choose the destination where you wish to save the file.

Bind Your Book
For only a dollar or two you can have a professional looking comb or spiral binding placed on your book at many print shops (Office Max, PIP, etc.).
