The Pueblo Chieftain is proud to be an

several decades the staff at The Chieftain often used its pages
to call to mind the sacrifice of our veterans and the heroism of our
citizens who have served in uniform. Publisher Robert Rawlings,
a World War II veteran himself, says:
The
Medal of Honor recipients help us as a community to remember all men
and women who have served our country in times of peace and war and
especially those who gave their lives."
It was Mr. Rawlings who initially conceived the
dream for the four large bronze statues that stand in what is now
known as "Heroes Plaza" in Pueblo. He personally led
the drive to raise funds for the project, assembling a team of
sponsors that not only brought the impressive National Medal of Honor
Memorial to fruition, but also brought nearly 100 of the living
recipients of the Medal of Honor to Pueblo for its dedication.
Located
at the Pueblo Convention Center, Heroes Plaza features four
larger-than-life bronze sculptures of Pueblo's hometown
heroes: Bill Crawford, Carl Sitter, Raymond Jerry Murphy
and Drew Dix. Behind them on polished black granite are
engraved the names of all Medal of Honor recipients since the
birth of the award in 1862.
Dedicated at the Medal of
Honor reunion in September 2000, the United States Congress has
declared it a NATIONAL Medal of Honor Memorial and proclaimed
the City of Pueblo to be America's Home Of Heroes.
For
his own laudable efforts, Mr. Rawlings received one of our Nation's
most prestigious awards, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society
Distinguished Citizen's Award. The Pueblo Chieftain, as
well as individual reporters, have also been recognized with numerous
awards for their coverage of these patriotic events in Pueblo.
The 44-page Medal of Honor supplement and Medal of Honor Society
Convention booklet, published by The Chieftain for the 2000
convention have been repeatedly recognized in the newspaper industry
for their professionalism and patriotism. Thousands of these
items have been mailed all over the world, free of charge, from the
